## WMA Mathswell Competition

Purpose: To promote the study of maths at schools through the use of problem solving.

Timing: End of August/early September each year

Format: Team based inter-school competition at specific year levels. Two rounds of questions being multi choice and problem solving. Two sections are selected at teh halfway point of the competition - the cup and plate.

Years: Competitions for Y5/6, Y7/8, Y9, Y10 and Y11 (Where combined years eg 5/6, students may be any mixture from those year groups).

Location: At varying schools each year. Starts at 7.00pm (Y5/6 starts at 6.30pm).

Teams: Each year level has a team of 6 with 3 doing multi-choice and a different 3 doing problem solving questions.

Multi-choice format: Each team is given 15 questions to be solved in 10 minutes. An answer sheet is provided to record answers. Teams may work individually or together. At the end of the 10 minutes, only the answers on the answer sheet are marked. The marker gives a total correct.

Problem solving format: Each team has 13 questions to answer in 15 minutes. They are given these one at a time. They write their answer on the question sheet and the marker can only mark right or wrong (no discussion allowed). If correct, the next question is given. If incorrect, the question is given back to the team to have another attempt. Only 2 attempts are allowed on each question. At any stage the team can pass on a question. Passed and incorrect questions can not be come back to at the end.

Calculators: Calculators are allowed at all levels.

Scoring: Teams are ranked for each part of the competition. 1 point for first, 2 second and so on. Ties get the same points. Both halves are added together to determine the overall winner.

Prizes: Prizes are awarded to the top 3 teams in the cup and plate sections on the night courtesy of various sponsors. Y11 also has a trophy.

Markers: Each participating school provides a marker. Markers are rotated so as not to mark their own schools.

Entry fee: $30 for primary and $45 for secondary if not already paid the WMA fee.

For 2017 a $5 per team fee is charged for entry. This will go towards a scholarshipfund for students to attend international competitions
